Young Stars in the Kitchen!

Posted: 26/05/2010 10:24:07 p.m.

The cooking segment was centered on food for kid’s of which my young lad was happy to make a cameo appearance with his old man, as long as we fitted in a trip to Te Papa and a few places of interest during our brief stop over. We had an extremely early morning start to catch our flight ex Auckland. By the time we faced lights, camera and action at the TVNZ studio Carlos was up for the tasks ahead. Noodles for kids and Corn fritters were our two dishes, a no brainer for the kid whose first word was “Cook- ing” and learned to chop when he was two. Plenty of chopping and dicing and flying vegetables in between yawns and time out for commercials.

The experience for me was a repeat performance of many morning cooking shows I have enjoyed presenting along side the lovely Mary Lambie. For Carlos, his first TV debut, he took it all in his stride and exuded confidence. When I asked him to throw the vegetables into the wok he rocket launched them from the other side of the bench, landing them precision perfect into the wok.

The main purpose of our TV appearance was to promote “The Growing Gourmet” children’s cooking classes to mum’s and dad’s and our budding cooking stars/master chefs of the future. Children of any age like to help in the kitchen. With this in mind I have designed cooking classes for young children that will inspire, excite and feed their curiosity as a growing gourmet.

The ‘GG’ classes allow children to be creative as well as learning a better understanding of nutrition. They will also learn patience and a sense of time management while building a familiarity and willingness to try new foods. The ‘GG’ will be introduced to cooking vocabulary, utensils and cooking techniques. They will learn the fundamentals of how to cook healthy nutritional dishes and touch on food safety. Most of all the classes will be an outlet for their creativity and to have FUN!

I am convinced that children given the right environment at an early age will learn how to become a team player also achieve a feeling of accomplishment, increase their confidence and self esteem. For more information about the classes please click the link http://www.rockcafe.co.nz
