Dear Mother Nature

I know that you are extremely busy, with Europe covered in Snow, America with lots of wind and storms that the rain in Australia and that is all taking up a large amount of your time. I am not one to ask for much but I am writing this letter only to express my thoughts and ask a favour. In no way do I intend to express disrespect to you. I love you as Mother Nature and you are the one and only Mother for all of us here in NZ. My trust for your wisdom is deep. Havelock Mussel Festival 17 th March 2012

I was standing in the middle of the Havelock Community Gardens last week, one eye on what was growing in the fertile beds that were flourishing with summer vegetables and the other on the magical view that was pouring in from the head of the Pelorus Sound. The magic drawing power of the Marlborough Sounds will soon be the venue for the Havelock Mussel festival 2012 which is fast approaching on the 17 th March. Having travelled around the world (in the years before children) sampling the very best of what other Foodie festivals have to offer I can honestly say that the Mussel Festival is one of my favourite, with the right mixture of music, community, food and atmosphere, fun activities, crafts and stalls and refreshments. The very fact that the whole of the Havelock community gets in behind this every year since 2006 means that it has a green future. . The funds from this festival are distributed back to groups and organisations in the local region and this plays a key role in laying down the foundations for a strong and vibrant community. more>

Plum about Seasonal Fruit

I am no plumber and when my dishwasher breaks down I call the plumber, when my car breaks down I call the mechanic and when I want to know about fresh seasonal summer fruit I talk to local growers and producers. Local sweet corn will be with us for another three weeks and if you have not enjoyed your first summer cob it is probably because we have not had much of a summer as of yet ! New seasons apples are now juicy sweet and crisp and it makes me wonder why we preserver with eating cool stored apples the rest of the year. The best tasting and the juiciest and succulent peaches and nectarines are now at their best, having soaked up the Marlborough sunshine over the last three month. Just like us all produce and fruit needs mother nature to shine a little light there way more>

Raspberry Smile

One of my favourite summer fruits is that of the elusive Raspberry, that perfectly ripe and sun sweetened berryfruit that is bursting with flavor and warmth, this is the main ingredient of the elusive Raspberry Smile. As a younger citizen of Aotearoa the family would go hunting for raspberries, stalking them in the bushes and leaping on them when discovered hiding from our small hands and hungry mouths. My grandmother would have jars upon jars lined up in the pantry next to elephant heart chutney, pear and ginger jam, Strawberry nectars and Boysenberry Jams. Rubber bands would hold cellophane taunt and while the small handwritten labels told me what it was but it was the colour and texture that really told the full story of what was captured behind the glass. more>
