I grew up in Hawke’s Bay then Otago enjoying the best of both lifestyle-wise. What I didn’t realise was that, at the age of five, the local produce, plus my mother’s superb cooking, made me a ‘foodie’ even before this now burgeoning species was discovered. At Otago Uni I studied to join the rag trade but ‘once a foodie always a foodie’ so I switched disciplines and travelled down the food route. It was a rewarding choice. It has opened doors all over the world. I’ve been writing for newspapers for 30 years commencing with the New Zealand Herald, the Auckland Star, then for the last 20 years syndicating a weekly column to regional newspapers together with colour images that I style and shoot myself.

My last two cookbooks, Marlborough on the Menu and Jan Bilton’s Tamarillo Cookbook showcase my recipes, food styling plus photographic skills. And it’s satisfying to have several companies employing my expertise in these fields.

Some of my favourite work experiences include: promoting New Zealand Kiwifruit and other New Zealand foods to overseas food writers as well as on TV and radio in the USA, Canada, Australia and Asia: developing New Zealand recipes and presenting them on the 13-part TV programme Fresh & Fancy Fare shown in this country plus in Australia and the USA; editing The Foodtown Magazine; authoring 27 cookbooks; and supplying my 12 newspapers with weekly food columns.

The latest highlight was winning the 2010 Le Cordon Bleu World Food Media Award for Best Wine/Food Guide for Marlborough on the Menu, a book that promotes the region where I now live.
