RE:Ken Yakitori, Karangahape Rd, Ak OMG Loooove KEN Yakitori!! We usually go to the Anzac Rd one.

Always start with the cabbage and mayo.. that mayo is devine! I brought it from the supermarket but it doesn't quite taste the same!
Love love the chicken thighs, prawn wrapped in pork. Deep Fried Cambembert, and rice balls!

My mouth is watering! Overdue for a Yakitori date!

Ken Yakitori, Karangahape Rd, Ak Ok so maybe it was because I'd never tried sashimi (let alone Japanese cuisine outside of sushi and tempura), and it was a much anticipated, degustatory experience, but I was hooked by Ken and shall begin a wading through of the menu from here on in. In fact I fear it may be addictive, with hankerings requiring a hopelessly regular fix

It was a Friday evening, around 7.30, and it was possible to duck in and hop up onto seats at the bench in front of the yakitori bbq (and watch the cooking going on), without having to wait ot be seated.

Yakitori is bbq-style food, with skewers of meat, seafood and vegetables cooked over charcoal and served with some sort of sauce or flavouring. It's a bit like a tasting menu, the portions themselves being small (a couple of skewers, enough for two), so possible to compose a meal of lots of things.

We started with Asahi beer and warm sake, and Tuna Sashimi with Wasabi Mayonnaise, and Agedashi Tofu (both from the kitchen menu), then happily grazed through Chicken thighs with Plum Miso, Prawns wrapped in bacon, and Yakitori Chicken (from the yakitori menu), accompanied by more Asahi and cold sake, and Edamame (steamed fresh soy beans) The dishes arrived in a steady progression, were perfectly cooked and extremely tasty, and the service was fast, friendly and efficient.

The atmosphere is cosy, smokily scented, and den like, with a relaxed, casual feel. And the food leaves one feeling sated without being over-full, so just right for an early evening dinner before meandering onward on a summer nights ventures.
